Today’s coffee is roasted by Fried Hats, founded by the legendary Lex Wenneker. I first met Lex in 2018 when I watched him win the Dutch barista championship and go on to come 2nd in the World right here in Amsterdam.
This insane coffee is the only coffee I’ve re-ordered 4 times this year (closely followed by the Varietals Finca El Paraiso at 3x). I guess that says enough already. I first tried it back in April when the lockdown started and I was working from home. Since I was in need of quite a bit of coffee, I pretty much placed an order of “1 on everything” with Lex.
There is a funky intenseness to it but adding around 80ml of water to a doubleshot (in Australia we call that a 3/4 long black) made for a crazy experience. I’m an amateur but it felt up there with comp coffee potential (probably not enough depth though). The fermented tropical fruit mix describes it best but with an overall sour rather than sweet tone.
Recently I ordered the filter roast and have tried some pour overs. It is a lot less intense and a more balanced experience. I sip on it like a matured old man reflecting on the spritely whipper snapper version from back in April.
It’s also my favourite label from the Fried Hats line-up!
